Earning a solid ACT score is hard enough, but a perfect ACT
score is a feat few people get to reach yet for a Chicago 16-year-old he not
only earned a perfect score but made history doing it.
“It’s amazing…When I first saw the score, I was surprised. I
was exalted, astounded,” Mario Hoover said to WLS news.
Hoover is a junior at Providence St. Mel High School and he
is the first student in his school’s 42 year history to earn a perfect score,
which is a 36 on the ACT college entrance exam. Hoover’s school principal
called him the “future of Black history.”
“In the sense that he has made history here in the present
and that’s going to live on forever,” Timothy Ervin, Providence-St. Mel School
principal told WFLD news.
Not only was the teen surprised, so was his mother.
“This is a 36! I’m like, Mario is this real?,” Zippora
Collins recalled.

The ACT is an assessment test many colleges use alongside
the SAT to determine college readiness. Many high schoolers spend years
preparing for the test which covers English, math, reading and science
subjects. Scores range from 1 to 36 and according to Best Colleges, “many students at Ivy League and top colleges earn a 33 or
higher on the ACT”.
In 2020, only 5,579 students earned a perfect score out of
more than 1.6 million who took the test ACT reported.
Hoover took the ACT twice with his first attempt earning his
a score of 29.
Hoover is very focused on his academics and extra
curriculars according to his mom. He has a 3.9 GPA and also runs track,
volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club and a local hospital and is an “all-state
musician” WLS reported.
“Doing the best that I can to boost my academic career and
professional career to inspire others to do the same,”
Hoover said.
Upon graduation, Hoover hopes to attend Columbia University
and major in neuroscience and minor in music.
RALEIGH, NC (March 27, 2023) – The American Lung Association celebrates the enactment of House Bill 76 to expand Medicaid in North Carolina.
“Eliminating disparities and improving access to quality, affordable healthcare is vital for all, especially for the more than 1.3 million North Carolina residents who currently live with a lung disease like asthma, COPD, or lung cancer,” said Danna Thomson, Director of Advocacy for North Carolina. “The American Lung Association commends North Carolina leaders on this bipartisan effort to close the coverage gap and expand Medicaid.”
“Medicaid expansion provides quality, affordable health coverage to low-income adults. In North Carolina, this equates to 600,000 residents having access to affordable healthcare. Medicaid expansion covers preventive services such as quit smoking treatments, lung cancer screenings for individuals at high risk, and pneumonia and influenza vaccinations. States that expanded Medicaid have seen numerous benefits in expanding access to care, improving health outcomes, and reducing health disparities, including many that directly benefit patients with asthma, COPD and lung cancer.”
The American Lung Association believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to lead a full and healthy life. More than half of the 27.5 million uninsured Americans are people of color, and research is clear that having health coverage impacts people’s medical care and ultimately their health outcomes.”
“We at the American Lung Association are committed to ensuring everyone has access to quality and affordable healthcare in North Carolina. The Lung Association will work to ensure this legislation is implemented swiftly and continue to champion the benefits of Medicaid expansion in the 10 remaining states that have not adopted this policy.
